# The Commons, With Stars

## Fully Autonomous Luxury Gay Space Communism

> This is a research and design program, not a declaration that post-scarcity, autonomous habitats, or space settlement are solved.

A rights-first program for abundant, beautiful, queer futures — built as public institutions on Earth first, and advanced off-world only when independent evidence and consent justify it.

Every claim below is labelled **PROVEN** (demonstrated today), **PROJECTED** (plausible within 10–30 years if dependencies are met), or **HORIZON** (speculative — a moral compass, never a budget line).

## Executive decision

Proceed Earth-first. Off-world activity stays conditional on independently passed evidence gates for safety, lawful governance, free exit, ecological integrity, and durable financing.

## Doctrine

- **Luxury.** Universally available time, care, health, beauty, accessibility, and leisure — hot food, real privacy, quiet rooms, gardens, sport, ceremony, and rest.
  - *Makes real:* A material floor of comfort everyone stands on: unhurried care, warm food, private space, and time that is not sold.
  - *Refuses:* Elite consumption, scarcity dressed as merit, or comfort rationed by output.
- **Gay.** Queer and trans liberation and chosen-family legitimacy as the habitat's official culture, resourced and constitutionally protected.
  - *Makes real:* Self-determined gender and sexuality, plural kinship recognized in law, and queer-specific medicine stocked as infrastructure.
  - *Refuses:* A demographic quota, rainbow decoration, or a tolerance that a later majority can quietly revoke.
- **Communism.** Democratically governed commons and shared basic systems held under a non-amendable rights floor.
  - *Makes real:* Water, air, food, energy, care, and housing owned in common and steered by an accountable, recallable assembly.
  - *Refuses:* One-party command, planning by decree, or a permanent managerial caste that owns the life support.
- **Autonomy.** Meaningful exit, bodily sovereignty, private communication, due process, and human override over every automated system.
  - *Makes real:* A funded door out for every resident, member-held keys, and the right to understand and stop any machine that acts on you.
  - *Refuses:* Any claim that a person owes labor, reproduction, data, or permanence to the habitat.

## A Day in the Commons

### The Greenhouse at first light

You wake to daylight tuned warm and eat food grown a corridor away.

- **Enabling system:** Controlled-environment agriculture and water recycling carry most, not all, of the load; Earth resupply is still visible.
- **Enforceable right:** Subsistence access to food, water, air, and warmth is a right, never a reward for compliance.

### The Clinic

Care is unhurried: hormones, PrEP, dentistry, surgery, mental health, and specialists a call away.

- **Enabling system:** On-site trauma capability plus telemedicine to Earth; queer-specific medicine is locally made or multiply stocked.
- **Enforceable right:** Bodily autonomy and self-determined identity; no one is outed, scored, or rationed into compliance.

### The Repair Atelier

Nothing is disposable. You mend a chair, print a part, teach a teenager the lathe.

- **Enabling system:** Circular fabrication with high material recovery; every machine is explainable and carries a hardware kill-switch.
- **Enforceable right:** The right to understand and override any automated system that acts on you.

### The Citizens' Assembly

A neighbor you were sortitioned alongside proposes a budget; you amend it in plain language.

- **Enabling system:** Liquid-democratic tooling plus sortition panels; every gram, litre, and kilowatt is on a public ledger.
- **Enforceable right:** Due process, appeal, and a recorded dissent — disagreement is published, not hidden.

### Private Quarters

A door that locks. Light and gravity you can vary. Room for intimacy, grief, and being unobserved.

- **Enabling system:** Privacy is engineered into the habitat, not bolted on; communications are encrypted and member-held.
- **Enforceable right:** Privacy of thought and communication; freedom of gender, sexuality, family, and reproduction.

### The Communal Dinner

Long tables, many kitchens, dietary and faith needs met without negotiation.

- **Enabling system:** Abundant shared kitchens and a non-trivial arts budget; care labor is compensated, never invisible.
- **Enforceable right:** Meaningful work and real leisure; the right to refuse labor without losing subsistence.

### The Dance Floor

Ballroom, leather, femme, butch, nonbinary — beauty as civic life, not subculture at the margins.

- **Enabling system:** Shared celebration space with the same care standards as the clinic; safety and consent are designed in.
- **Enforceable right:** Freedom of association and expression; satire and dissent are protected, sacred cows may be mocked.

## Governance architecture

Separated powers under a non-amendable rights floor. Emergency authority is logged and expires automatically after 90 days (sunset).

- **Elected assembly.** Sets budgets and law in plain language. _Accountability:_ Term limits; recall by one-third petition; no office over two terms.
- **Operations service.** Runs day-to-day systems as professionals. _Accountability:_ Cannot amend rights; bound by the public commons ledger.
- **Judiciary & ombuds.** Adjudicates disputes and enforces exit. _Accountability:_ Independent budget; rulings appealable; dissent is recorded.
- **Medical authority.** Holds clinical and dosimetry decisions. _Accountability:_ Independent of operations; cannot be overridden for productivity.
- **Emergency command.** Acts only in genuine emergencies. _Accountability:_ Powers are logged and expire automatically after 90 days.
- **Citizens' panels.** Sortitioned review of high-stakes decisions. _Accountability:_ Rotating membership resists capture; findings are public.
- **External audit.** Independent safety, ecological, and finance review. _Accountability:_ Whistleblower access guaranteed; no single funder over 30% of budget.

All figures are planning ranges, not commitments. No single funder may control more than 30% of the budget, and every phase carries a funded decommissioning and safe-return reserve before it begins.

## Roadmap and evidence gates

### 100 days — Charter & evidence (PROVEN)

- **Deliverable:** Publish the rights charter, governance simulator, open technical reference architecture, terrestrial closed-loop plan, and an audited cost model.
- **Dependency:** None beyond funding and independent reviewers.
- **Reviewer:** Independent legal, safety, disability, and queer/trans reviewers.
- **Failure state:** A charter that reads as a cult manifesto or omits kill criteria.
- **Stop condition:** No public rights floor or source ledger by day 100 → do not proceed.

### 2 years — Earth demonstrators (PROJECTED)

- **Deliverable:** Operate cooperative housing, care, food, energy, and fabrication pilots with a transparent commons ledger and measured wellbeing.
- **Dependency:** Municipal partners; closed-loop demonstrators at 95%+ water/air.
- **Reviewer:** External audit of distribution, accessibility, and exit events.
- **Failure state:** Benefits captured by a few; exit made costly; incidents concealed.
- **Stop condition:** Any coerced residency or rights-for-productivity bargain → halt.

### 10 years — Analog & orbital demonstrations (PROJECTED)

- **Deliverable:** HI-SEAS-class analog habitats and, only through lawful partnerships, a single crewed orbital module validating closed-loop life support.
- **Dependency:** Launch trending below $200/kg or a credible ISRU alternative; dose held under 600 mSv; proven full-population evacuation.
- **Reviewer:** Independent engineering + medical authority; UNOOSA-of-record.
- **Failure state:** Life-support margins breached and concealed; evacuation unproven.
- **Stop condition:** ECLSS cannot exceed 90% water / 80% O₂ closure → cancel expansion.

### 30 years — Contingent settlement (HORIZON)

- **Deliverable:** A durable off-world community — only if every prior gate is green and Earth's ecological debt is shrinking. Never promised.
- **Dependency:** All Phase 0–2 gates passed; continuous right of return; intergener-ational safety thresholds met before any child is born off-world.
- **Reviewer:** Standing external audit; published, empty-by-design kill log.
- **Failure state:** Governance capture; radiation or evacuation limits exceeded.
- **Stop condition:** Wellbeing and equity fall for four reporting periods → terminate.

## Red lines

- No coerced residency, blocked exit, debt bondage, forced labor, or rights conditional on productivity.
- No reproductive coercion, forced identity disclosure, discrimination, or surveillance abuse.
- No concealed casualties, hazards, ecological impacts, or life-support failures.
- No indefinite emergency rule, opaque algorithmic authority, single-funder capture, or unreviewable security power.
- No terra-nullius or colonial appropriation; comply with the Outer Space Treaty and protect affected publics.
- No ecological externalization, fraudulent closure claims, irreversible lock-in, or militarization as the primary identity.

## Kill criteria

1. Exit is intentionally blocked, or safe evacuation cannot be provided to every participant.
2. Coerced labor, residency, identity disclosure, reproduction, or a rights-for-productivity exchange is substantiated.
3. Severe casualties, hazards, ecological damage, or system failures are concealed.
4. Emergency authority fails to sunset, governance capture persists, or independent review is obstructed.
5. Life-support, radiation, medical, rescue, or structural risks exceed independently approved limits.
6. The program violates space law, enables appropriation, or cannot remedy harms to affected communities.
7. Funding requires a permanent underclass, dominant donor control, or lacks a safe decommissioning reserve.
8. Wellbeing and equity deteriorate for four consecutive reporting periods without an effective corrective plan.

## Methodology

- **Label every claim.** Each public claim is marked PROVEN, PROJECTED, or HORIZON. Nothing speculative is dressed as solved.
- **Preserve context.** Figures keep their date, configuration, and source. Where sources disagree — like the ISS 90% vs 98% water baselines — we preserve both contexts instead of averaging them away.
- **Cite or withdraw.** A consequential claim is sourced or it is removed. The sources page lists every reference.
- **Publish disagreement.** Dissent is recorded, not hidden. Negative results and incidents are published alongside successes.
- **Independent review.** Legal, engineering, medical, ecological, labor, disability, and queer/trans reviewers gate each phase.
- **Reversible commitments.** Every phase is small, funded to decommission, and reversible before the next begins.

The single reconciliation note we refuse to average away: ISS water recovery has been cited at both ~90% and ~98% for different system configurations and dates. Both contexts are preserved.
